So I made a change in the navigation menu at the top. Under the "Words" section, the links will actually take you to word lists rather than flashcards. And from there, you can view flashcards. I just found that this is more helpful for me. I spent a ridiculous amount of time yesterday just trying to vertically align buttons, but that's just web development I guess.

I'm also just trying to add more words that I already know. I like to think of this app as a collection of all the Teochew words that I know, but there are definitely more words that I just haven't thought of! Anyway, here are more translations that have been added since the last update:

  • to close (as well as "to turn off", because they're the same word)
  • medicine
  • English
  • first (as in, you gotta do this thing first)
  • dough
  • few (the adjective form, which is different from "a few")
  • snake
  • airplane
  • to hold

As I'm doing this, I'm continuing to reorganize the categories. Eventually, I want to add a feature for generating a custom set of flashcards, where you can pick multiple categories at once. But that might be a bit before I get there.

Finally, I've added a little bit of extra detail to the Dialects lesson!

You might notice that I have larger categories (that you can see in the nav bar at the top), and also subcategories within each one. Now if you're viewing a category page, there are links to have flashcards just for a specific subcategory! I actually want to do a bit of reorganizing of categories, but that will come later.

I've also got some new translations:

  • classifier (for slices)
  • two slices of bread
  • to exercise
  • stocks
  • Chinese fried dough stick

Also, I realized that I've been misunderstanding the Teochew terms for "cousin" wrong this whole time! I thought tang5 meant cousin on your dad's side and bio2 meant cousin on your mom's side, but that's wrong. tang5 is used for cousins that share the same family name as you, so basically just your dad's brothers' kids.

Finally, I made a tiny improvement. While fixing my translations for the word cousin, I noticed that the "Words and phrases containing..." section of the translation page could show words that are the same as what's on the page already. So I fixed this to remove duplicates.

I started working on a big update: upgrading Bootstrap. We'll see how it goes! I'm working on it in a separate branch and if you really want, you can see the progress in the github repo.

Other than that, I've got more translations:

  • diarrhea
  • skin coining
  • dead
  • good idea
  • cured meat
  • a pair of chopsticks

By the way, with the word diarrhea, I feel like I've been saying it wrong my whole life. Or that most other people just...pronounce it differently than I do? I've added the more widely used pronunciation, but I also have a footnote for it.
