So I went and added a new feature! Now you can see my extra notes in the flashcards for any words that have them. They only show up after you "flip" the flashcard to reveal the Chinese. I thought this was going to be something really easy to add and it turns out it was a total pain in the butt. I'm also not super happy with how it looks, but I don't have better ideas right now. I got a little lazy in terms of committing my changes and testing them out, so hopefully I didn't introduce any bugs 😬
I've also added some more translations:
- to take a break
- saucer
- pot
- jar
- sick
And I added another translation for "to call on the phone" and I also added an extra note for it, to add some clarification. Check out the translation page if you want to see it!

Hello! I've been spending a lot of time lately on another fun project, which is why I haven't updated in a few days. But I've got more translations added today:
- Mandarin (language)
- cup
- to yawn
- to order food
- chicken thigh
- chicken wings
- some
There is still more to come with the Traditional/Simplified effort, so stay tuned!

Big update today! I've finally added the option to choose whether you want simplified or traditional characters to be shown on the site. You can do this using the Site Settings button on the top right hand corner of the page. I've also moved the Dark/Light mode setting here too.
No new words added today. Please let me know if you find any bugs!

Some number of updates ago, I talked about how I had to add another font to the site just to display the character for ghao5 (smart). Well, today I wanted to add another character, and that extra font that I added didn't have a glyph for it! So, I decided to change my approach here, and I downloaded FontForge and learned how to make my own custom font. Sort of. I don't really know what I'm doing, but now you can see the custom characters in both ghao5 and na7 (to be at).
I'm also cleaning up some of the extra notes I display as a part of working on the feature to show traditional characters.
Finally, here are the new translations I added:
- east
- west
- south
- north
- Asia
I also added more translations for "kitchen" and "Southeast Asia"! A while back someone had complained about my translation for it, and I've finally added a more literal one.

I have a really exciting update in progress! I'm currently in the process of making it possible to view traditional characters on the site, rather than simplified. That's going to take a while to completely implement, so I've got it in another branch, and if you're really curious you can see what I've done so far on github.
In the meantime, I've added some more words:
- cloudy
- to cover
- weekend
- dangerous
- to decorate
And I've also added two words for toilet! I went down a rabbit hole on the different ways that people say toilet (and restroom), and I'm lumping them all under the same entry for now because it seems kind of interchangeable.
